Comparing Website Platforms: HubSpot, NationBuilder, Shopify, Wix and WordPress

When it comes to building a website, there are a number of options available for businesses of all sizes. Five popular choices are HubSpot, WordPress, Shopify, NationBuilder, and Wix. In this blog, we will compare the features of each platform and help you determine which one might be the best fit for your business.

Full Disclosure: acorn30 has partnerships with some of these three providers (among others!) and we build websites in many different platforms.

HubSpot

HubSpot is an all-in-one marketing and sales platform that includes a website builder, CRM, marketing automation, and sales automation tools. The platform is designed to help businesses attract, engage, and delight customers throughout the entire sales process.

One of the key features of HubSpot's website builder is its ability to create and manage landing pages, email campaigns, and social media posts all in one place. This allows businesses to easily create and execute their marketing campaigns without the need for multiple platforms. Additionally, HubSpot offers a robust analytics suite that allows businesses to track the performance of their website and gain insights into their customers' behavior.

HubSpot's website builder also includes a number of SEO tools that can help businesses improve their search engine rankings. The platform includes tools for keyword research, content optimization, and link building, which can help businesses attract more traffic to their website.

On the downside, it's a pricier option than most web platforms however it is much more than a website rather it's an all-in-one marketing tool. As well, the backend database uses HubL which is a custom code making it difficult for customization short of contracting somebody with these very specific skills.

WordPress

WordPress is a popular open-source content management system (CMS) that allows businesses to create and manage their own websites. The platform is highly customizable and offers a number of themes and plugins that can be used to add features and functionality to a website.

One of the key features of WordPress is its flexibility. The platform can be used to create a variety of websites, from simple blogs to complex e-commerce sites. Additionally, WordPress is highly scalable, which means it can grow with a business as its needs change.

WordPress also includes a number of SEO tools that can help businesses improve their search engine rankings. The platform includes plugins for keyword research, content optimization, and link building, which can help businesses attract more traffic to their website.

On the downside, being open source and widely used around the world, the WordPress ecosystem is vulnerable to attacks. So while it's an affordable option to build on, you will need to plan to budget for enhanced security measures, backups and regular maintenance over the lifetime of your website.

Shopify

Shopify is an e-commerce platform that allows businesses to create and manage online stores. Fondly referred to as a 'store in a box', the platform includes a website builder, shopping cart software, and payment processing tools, making it easy for businesses to sell their products online.

One of the key features of Shopify is its ease of use. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, which means businesses can quickly and easily set up an online store without the need for technical expertise.

Shopify also includes a number of SEO tools that can help businesses improve their search engine rankings. The platform includes tools for keyword research, content optimization, and link building, which can help businesses attract more traffic to their online store.

Shopify is really great to roll out an eCommerce store quickly with ready-made templates that can be customized rather easily. However, small businesses have found that as they grow, it gets expensive to operate on the platform. Basic functionalities and plans serve a very basic function but additional apps/plugins are needed to address everchanging needs and business growth.

NationBuilder

NationBuilder is a platform designed specifically for political campaigns, non-profits, and other organizations focused on community building. The platform includes a website builder, CRM, email marketing, and social media management tools.

One of the key features of NationBuilder is its ability to manage volunteers and supporters. The platform includes tools for organizing events, tracking donations, and managing email lists. Additionally, NationBuilder offers advanced social media management tools that allow organizations to track their social media presence and engage with their followers.

NationBuilder also includes a website builder that allows organizations to create custom websites with built-in fundraising and advocacy tools. The platform includes a number of templates that can be customized to fit the needs of different organizations.

Again, not unlike HubSpot, NationBuilder is a pricey option as a stand alone website builder. However if you're looking to get metrics on your audience and manage/monitor engagement with your online community it's a great all-in-one platform.

Wix

Wix is a website builder that allows businesses to create and manage their own websites. The platform includes a drag-and-drop editor, which makes it easy for businesses to create custom designs without the need for technical expertise.

One of the key features of Wix is its ease of use. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, which means businesses can quickly and easily create a website without the need for technical expertise.

Wix also includes a number of SEO tools that can help businesses improve their search engine rankings. The platform includes tools for keyword research, content optimization, and link building, which can help businesses attract more traffic to their website.

For a DIY-er, Wix is a great option and the drag and drop interface is relatively easy to use and figure out. That said, the options with templates are limited so expect to be frustrated because you want something to look or work a certain way but it's not possible.
